Torrente 2: Mission In Marbella

After strutting around Spain’s Coast del Sol, agent Torrente decides to settle in Marbella, where, unbelievably, he feels right at home. There, he spends his time doing what he likes best: defending good citizens, seeing that justice is carried out and duping as many suckers as possible. A powerful arms dealer enters the scene – a madman who threatens to destroy the city unless he receives a gazillion dollars in ransom, just like that! There is only one man in the whole world that can save the city, but unfortunately, he is somewhere else, filming yet another movie.

The Shining

Think of the greatest terror imaginable. Is it a monstrous alien? A lethal epidemic? Or, as in this harrowing masterpiece from Stanley Kubrick, is it fear of murder by someone who should love and protect you – a member of your own family?

From a script he co-adapted from the Stephen King novel, Kubrick melds vivid performances, menacing setting, dreamlike tracking shots and shock after shock into a milestone of the macabre. In a signature role, Jack Nicholson plays Jack Torrance, who’s come to the elegant, isolated Overlook Hotel as off-season caretaker with his wife and son. Torrance has never been there before – or has he? The answer lies in a ghostly time warp of madness and murder.

The Ghost Breakers

Larry Lawrence, sought in connection with a murder he did not commit, eludes New York police by hiding in a steamer trunk. Soon the trunk (and Larry) are aboard a ship bound for Cuba, where the trunk’s owner, pretty Mary Carter, is sailing to take possession of a recent inheritance: a “haunted” castle. Sensing that Mary is in danger, Larry and his valet Alex precede her to the island, which is inhabited by a ghost, a zombie and perhaps even a flesh and blood fiend. There’s romance, comedy and chills as Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard contend with earthly and un-earthly foes – and try to keep from ending up as ghosts themselves!

Awakening Of The Beast

Awakening Of The Beast is a deliriously psychedelic nightmare about the rise of drug use and perversion among the youth of the nation. In a series of increasingly bizarre vignettes we see all manner of depravity, from a group of finger-sniffing hippies to a lecherous movie producer seducing a young starlet. Four drug addicts are chosen out of this group to take part in an LSD experiment. What follows is the closest thing to a real acid trip ever put on film — but are they under the influence of LSD or Coffin Joe? Banned by Brazil’s military dictatorship for nearly 20 years, it is now considered by many to be Mojica’s masterpiece.

At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul

Unholy undertaker, evil philosopher, denizen of dreams and hallucination — Coffin Joe, with his trademark top hat, black cape and long talon-like finger nails, is a horror icon in his native Brazil. He is the creation of writer-director-star Jose Mojica Marins whose perversely original and strangely personal filmmaking style has been compared to an unholy blend of Mario Brava, Luis Bunuel and Russ Meyer.

The film debut of Coffin Joe was also the first true horror film make in Brazil. Joe terrorizes a small religious community in his search for the perfect woman to bear a child. Frightening, atmospheric and startlingly graphic for it’s time. 35 years later, “At Midnight I’ll Take Your Soul” has become an international horror classic.
